Visual and Media Arts

These self-directed experiences may be enjoyed throughout Winterfest and will run throughout the week.

Urban Soul: Black Tile Gallery

The exhibition Urban Soul invites viewers to contemplate the living creativity that pumps vibrancy and culture into the veins of a city, a park, or anywhere that humans share space. Six artists contribute their voices and make their mark in this exhibition through various mediums. Whether their art is on a skateboard, a T-shirt, a road sign, or a large mural-like panel, they are using a visual language to express their individual identities and contribute to a continually evolving cultural conversation.

Mural Painting by Grades 10 - 12 in the Media Hallway, Basement near to Fitness room and The Fishbowl:

Bringing Art to the school community, these murals-in-action provide us all with a golden opportunity to watch large scale artworks evolve. Featuring a host of different themes and styles, each piece creates a reflective space where the artist can talk about their artwork with visitors.

Art 7-9 and Art 10 Displays: Colour and value explorations

Various locations around the school.

MOSAIC Display - Grades 9 - 12: Located Outside the Canvas Cafe

Students from grade 9-12 ceramics have been exploring math in art! A tessellation tile is a geometric shape that interlocks with one another without overlapping to cover an area of a wall in an astonishing way! Our tessellation installation consists of a stylized leaf form and a parallelogram that intertwines with one another.

Ceramics Wheel Demonstration: Located in First Square

Ever wonder how it's made? Watch ceramics students create artworks on the pottery wheel. Learn about the different methods and vocabulary associated with this cool process. Students can ask questions, feel the clay, and try to spin a pot!

Mural Created by Mekayla Nicolai and Grade 6: Located outside the Theatre Doors

Kenojuak Ashevak is a famously known artist for being the first female Inuit artist to have artwork featured on a Canada Post Stamp and the first woman to become involved with the newly established printmaking shop at Cape Dorset. Guest artist, Mekayla Nicolai worked with grade 6 students to recreate some of the most iconic artworks from Kenojuak.

Ceramic Art Show: Located in the Ceramic Nook

Enjoy the variety of artworks created by Ceramic 9-12 classes. Many of these artworks are created using various hand-built methods, throwing on the pottery wheel, and sculpting. Students have decorated their creations using a variety of decoration methods with colored slips, brush on glazes, and dip glazes. All ceramic artwork at Victoria School is fired in an electric kiln utilizing our electricity from solar panels installed on the exterior building. Ceramic art is an important medium because it provides a way for students to express themselves, be creative, and creativity and add beauty in the form of decoration

Film and Media Showcase:

We are excited to share in our screening space (Room 1211) some of the various Film and Media 7-12 video projects students have planned, filmed and edited. In the senior level of our program, students have had the opportunity to create stop motion, 2D animation, cinematic shorts, short-documentaries, and other styles of filmwork they are interested in exploring. Classes attending this viewing will have the opportunity to choose the content in which they will view, based on the age of the students viewing. (Warning: some of the videos showcased will have content meant for a more mature audience than elementary. Students will include content warnings in front of films that this applies to.)
